BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS

Geek Mag Facebook Fans Revolt
Monday, January 25, 2010

Facebook fandom can be a good thing for most magazines, but when readers feel betrayed the social network becomes a tool for public retribution against a brand. When rumors started swirling last week that pop culture magazine Geek Monthly was folding, the company was not responding to press queries about the possible closure and not communicating with subscribers about the fate of recent issues. The Geek Monthly Facebook page erupted in protest.

The company has not issued a formal announcement of the magazine’s closure, but subscribers on the title’s Facebook page are claiming to have contacted members of the staff and are saying the magazine is dead.

Many recent subscribers are outraged with publisher Fusion Publishing’s lack of communication with their loyal base.

One poster says, “Sheerly disgusted with this magazine company as I (unknowingly) purchased a subscription for my boyfriend for Christmas. They took my money with no problem and now there's no magazine? Why did they even take my money (in NOVEMBER) when they knew they would be not be publishing the magazine anymore?”

The site has not been updated recently, and it continues to advertise subscriptions, although only back issues now seem to be available on the store. The publisher has not yet responded to our queries for comment and confirmation of the magazine's close.

I was a 'loyal subscriber' since issue #2, was never sent issue #3, I paid the original $40 yearly fee to subscribe, and was a little irked when they not only 'combined' issues #5 and #6, but then they skimped and made a crappy 'miniaturized' issue for #7... I am amazed that all issues are not worth much now, except of course #1, which I cannot afford to pay the $50 it is going for on eBay! My biggest complaint about them, besides the fact that they abandoned US 'fans' and moved the same magazine overseas, is that they never even sent me the last 3 issues, even after I emailed multiple times, saw them go by on thier website, and never saw them in my mailbox. VERY upset about that! Especially since I heard they did not even sell the last issues on newsstands, just sent them to a selected group of subscribers. I guess I did not count as one, even though I had subscribed to all issues of the mag except #1! I hope they die of EPIC FAIL overseas too, it's not fair to us that they get away with taking subscribers' money even after they folded!
