BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
Android Could Be Your Next iPhone consumer survey by comScore, 17% of people who are in the market for a new smartphone are planning to buy an Android-based unit, compared to 20% targeting an iPhone. While the iPhone continues to attract the lion’s share of data traffic from smartphones, the Google-backed Android platform is poised to rival Apple’s mobile ecosystem next year. Android currently holds only 3.5% of the smartphone market, which is dominated by the BlackBerry and iPhone. But its market share has doubled in the past year, comScore reports. iPhone users are notoriously content-hungry, with 94% of them interacting with mobile media. But developers for the Android app market can expect similar levels of engagement, with 92% consuming mobile media. When it comes to using news and the mobile Web browser, 80% of people on both platforms access those features. For the ever-popular mobile apps that both platforms promote, 83% of iPhone owners engage with an app and 82% of Android users do. With the Apple iPhone still tied to an exclusive contract with AT&T, the handset has a limited ability to expand its market. Running now on both the Verizon and T-Mobile networks under multiple models, the Android platform could be positioned better for longer-term growth as its partner networks and hardware makers can penetrate a broader range of market niches. According to comScore survey numbers, the recent carpet bombing of ads for the Verizon Droid and T-Mobile MyTouch (both Android-powered) have had their effect in driving different audiences to the mobile OS. Metrics released today from mobile ad network AdMob (recently acquired by Google) show that the Android's share of smartphone traffic (as measured by ad requests) increased from 20% in October to 27% in November. Clearly, Android has momentum coming into 2010. Apple may have the coolness factor wrapped up in the mobile market, but Android’s more open approach to networks and hardware partners could prove the winning strategy. Either way, publishers should start asking themselves (and their mobile developers) when, not whether, they should be in the Android market. LEt's not forget that android is also on sprint, and looks like some phones are coming to ATT as well. And let's not forget the international community, which sadly I have forgotten the names of the carriers. :)

This article fails to take into consideration that the iPhone marketing strategy is going to stay the same. There's always the possibility that the exclusivity with AT&T will end (perhaps soon, sometime in 2010) and that the iPhone will be available on other carriers in the US.
