Blu-ray: Your Next Publishing Platform?
Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Magazine-branded content is popping up everywhere—on Internet-connected TVs, set-top boxes, mobile phone decks and iPods. The next untapped device may well be the Blu-ray high-definition movie disc (BD). According to Variety’s Video Business, the makers of the next-generation home video platform are looking to established Web content players to fill out a unique connectivity feature embedded in many discs and BD players.

In some recent film discs such as Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, viewers were able to access their Facebook accounts via the disc while watching the movie. They could update their status notes and send comments on the film to friends. In the new X-Men Origins: Wolverine BD release, 20th Century Fox partnered with Amazon’s IMDB film database so viewers could access an exhaustive catalog of films from their TV.

Many BD players have wired or wireless Internet connections that support the “BD Live” feature on discs. BD Live was designed to enhance a disc with Web-based additional content the users could access directly from the disc and on their TV. The first iterations of BD Live focused on creating new multimedia experiences that showed off the technology. But in order to cut costs, Hollywood studios are looking to existing Web content for add-ons to their discs.

Video Business
reports that the upcoming BD release of Julie & Julia will let the user send themselves a recipe from within the BD interface. Deals with Amazon for film ordering and other content providers working with Twitter feeds are on deck as well. In some proposed models, viewers will be able to Twitter about a BD they are watching from within the film interface itself. One of the early intermediary companies in this new platform, Related Content Database, just announced a deal with digital video platform provider Videon Central that integrates both companies’ technologies to create Web-based applications that can run on BD Live. Potentially, the home video disc could also play host to the same sorts of widgets and mobile applications that hyper-distribute content on Web social media and mobile phones.

Much like magazine partnerships with specific film properties, the BD Live feature on a Blu-ray disc opens up a world of possibilities for combining branded digital content resources with the entire BD platform or just with specific film properties. As the connected devices proliferate, film companies need to promote the unique properties of the BD format to advance the platform. But these discs can easily become black holes of development costs where the investment can quickly outstrip the returns. Content providers that can find creative ways of repackaging existing Web site, audio and video content may find an eager partner in Blu-ray disc makers and yet another way to insinuate a magazine’s brand into the entertainment experience.
