BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
Scholastic Kid Reporters Back on the Beat recruited scores of 10-to-14-year-olds to do real reporting on the election trail. And now the cubs are covering a beat that is closer to home (and perhaps no less sensitive a topic): back to school. The Scholastic Kids Press Corps launches this week with 50 reporters covering current events, sports and hometown news from around the country. The new site maintains a running blog in which the reporters share their concerns and experiences in and out of school. The young journos will be interviewing entertainment figures, posting reviews and even covering red carpet premieres. A “Tips from the Pros” section will feature journalism advice from adult professionals. And as with all of Scholastic’s productions, there is a teacher resource section for incorporating the material into classrooms. The Kids Press Corps Web site provides a permanent home to a project Scholastic kicked off on an occasional basis in 2000. For their 2008 reporting on the elections, min declared it the “Best of the Web: Special Online Coverage” this year.
