Smith Resigns as Texas Monthly President
Friday, July 17, 2009

Evan Smith leaves after less than one year as Austin-based Texas Monthly president to become CEO of the nonprofit/nonpartisan Texas Tribune. He was TM editor-in-chief for eight years, with two "General Excellence" National Magazine Awards among his many achievements. Elevation to president accompanied the Aug. 31, 2008, retirement of TM founder (1973) Mike Levy.

Smith's successor is executive VP/advertising and adminstration Elynn Russell, who has been with TM for three decades.  Russell is the first woman to lead the magazine, where each editor from the start has been male.

Smith remains a TM consultant, and he will continue to host Texas Monthly Talks on PBS stations in the state.  He is also a past American Society of Magazine Editors president.
