A Flatter, Sexier Cosmo Site
Tuesday, June 23, 2009

“Flat” may not be a compliment in the curvy fantasy land of the Cosmopolitan reader, but it is an apt and positive description of the attractive relaunch of the brand online. Sporting more of a magazine-like look and feel, with larger image blocks and bolder headlining, the redesign brings more of the Cosmo content to the surface. Topmost among the innovations is a drop-down nav bar with illustrated links into specific features and popular articles rather than generic links into subsections. In some ways the new nav design blends the best of a magazine table of contents with the demands of site navigation. A thumbnail for a featured article is always present.

The right rail of the site is now populated with all of the interactive features and prominent eye-candy games and sweepstakes, video and newsletter signups. Following the new dictum that every page should behave like a home page, Cosmopolitan.com now reiterates its “Hot Right Now” panel of most-accessed articles on interior channel pages.

The entire site has a lighter, less cluttered feel, yet its use of drop-downs, video and feature carousels manages to bring much of the best content to the home page.

Cosmopolitan has experienced significant growth in the last few years online. According to min’s Digital Boxscores for April, the site had about 2 million monthly uniques consuming nearly 50 million pages.
