Scott Flanders Takes CEO Post at Playboy
Monday, June 1, 2009

After speculation and rumors circulated all day Monday, Playboy Enterprises announced late this afternoon that Scott Flanders is the new CEO. He was also added to the board of directors for Playboy Enterprises. Flanders, most recently CEO of Freedom Communications, is also a veteran of Columbia House Company, where he was also CEO. In both cases Flanders gained a reputation as a corporate streamliner and advocate of interactive initiatives.

“In Scott we believe we have found a seasoned CEO who is uniquely suited to running Playboy,” said David Chemerow, himself appointed today as non-executive chairman of the board, in a statement. Chemerow is SVP and CFO of Olympus Media.

Flanders will lead the corporate strategy and direction for Playboy, which has suffered recent declines in revenues and readership. PEI is facing delisting with the New York Stock Exchange because of a foundering stock price. In picking Flanders over interim CEO Jerome Kern, PEI may be signaling it is backing away from earlier suggestions the company was for sale. Kern had suggested as much in a recent earning call. In interviews today with Chicago Tribune, Flanders said he intended to build lasting value for the brand, which some market mavens read as a sign the company was off the block.

Flanders will assume his new role on July 1. The 52-year-old preceded his stints at Columbia House and Freedom with jobs at e-commerce firm Telstreet and with Macmillan Publishing.

The search for a PEI CEO started five months ago when longtime company leader Christie Hefner announced she was stepping down.
