BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS

Majority of Marketers Using Social Media
Thursday, April 16, 2009

Lest there be any lingering misconception on this topic, more and more marketers are embracing social media as  a gold mine in waiting, according to a new study. Some still have basic questions about how they can leverage it to improve tactics. But for the most part, marketers are diving headlong into the social media pool. Following are a few key findings just unveiled in Michael Stelzner's Social Media Marketing Industry Report:

  • A significant 88% of marketers surveyed are using social media to market their businesses, but 72% have only been doing so for a few months or less;
  • A significant 64% of marketers are using social media for five hours or more each week and 39% for 10 or more hours weekly;
  • 81% of all marketers indicated that the No. 1 advantage is generating exposure for the business,followed by increasing traffic and building new business partnerships;
  • Twitter, blogs, LinkedIn and Facebook were the top four social media tools used by marketers, in that order; and
  • Social bookmarking sites were ranked of highest interest, followed closely by Twitter.

The top question marketers want answered is related to best practices and tactics. Some of those questions include:

  • Which social media method has been the most successful overall and how have you used that method?

  • How do I stand out while creating strategic partnerships with those in the same field?

  • How can social media help to build our brand and reinforce our credibility among consumers?

  • Can using blogs, short videos, tweets and status updates help us market our core products, or do they just get in the way of our message?

  • Is it true that social media marketing is better suited for branding than direct response?

1.
I'm surprised the figure is that high for businesses using social media (88%) because I've talked to several hundred business people in the past month and most are still "planning" to use SMM. However, I've been following Michael Stelzner on Twitter for a while so I'm comfortable with his results. Could be I find the numbers high since they're including blogs. I generally think "Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn" when talking about social media/networking.
