Senior Vice President, Consumer Marketing, HBO

If the child version of Courteney Monroe had her druthers, then her current incarnation would be sipping coffee in front of a camera and pitching softball questions at celebrities.

“I was convinced I would be running a morning show,” she says, “called ‘Breakfast with Courteney.’”

But, as is often the case, adulthood altered that vision, though perhaps less than she realizes. There are still the celebrities and cameras—only, she’s not in front of them. Now Monroe is the SVP of consumer marketing for HBO, quite possibly the most celebrated television programming company in history. Her first-ever assignment on the job (in a more junior position) nine years ago was to come up with a marketing concept for a little show called “Sex and the City.” Not a bad stepping stone, considering the show’s ascent to superstardom that mirrors Monroe’s climb up the ranks at HBO.

Now, coupled with her recent inheritance of responsibility for HBO.com, Monroe has a resume of killer ad campaigns under her belt that embody today’s need for marketers to create integrated strategies and to leverage online platforms’ unique communications capabilities.

Consider the following as evidence of her innovative style:
  • Big Love’s first campaign launched on Valentine’s Day and incorporated photographs of the main character and his three wives on CNet’s Webshots.” The initiative was supplemented with print ads that mimicked wedding announcements.
  • To promote the 6th season of the Sopranos, ads incorporated a map identifying 15 key locations from the show’s 5th season using Google Maps technology, allowing fans to take a cyber-journey through major milestones.
  • Nickname: Court
  • Birthday: December 21, 1968
  • Who I wanted to be when I grew up: Katie Couric
  • Hobbies: Date night with my husband • Anything that involves spending time with my delicious children, Miles and Lola •Telemark skiing • Spinning • Lunch with small groups of people on my staff, as I am endlessly impressed by the work they all do and how interesting they all are as people

Recent Accomplishments:

  • Launched first HBO Brand marketing ef- fort in ten years—the multiplatform “HBO Voyeur Project.”
  • Launched multiple marketing campaigns in support of HBO programming including—Entourage, Big Love, Flight of the Conchords, the award-winning documentary Addiction, and the final season of The Sopranos.
  • Oversaw the opening of HBO’s first-ever retail store.
  • Assumed responsibility of HBO.com and supervised significant re-vamping of the site.
  • Cheered on my husband Mike as he com pleted his 6th Ironman Traithalon
  • Celebrated my beautiful daughter Lola’s 1st birthday
  • Potty-trained my almost 3-year-old delectable son, Miles

mInsight

Monroe is a go-getter, and apparently it's a tendency she shares with her husband, Mike. A former Air Force “Force Recon” operator, he likes to pass the time by participating in Ironman Triathalons. With these two as parents, we can't imagine what their two children, Lola and Miles, will growup to be.
