21 Most Intriguing: Wilma Jordan
Wednesday, November 14, 2007

President, The Jordan, Edmiston Group, Inc.

Wilma Jordan has been a power player in media ever since putting together a student buyout team for the then-on-the-skids Esquire in 1979. After running the magazine for seven years, Jordan and Co sold the book for an extreme profit. Success (and extreme profit) have followed Jordan wherever she's gone. Since June 2006, Jordan's Jordan Edmiston Group Inc., top niche media bank, has closed 34 deals - by our count, by far the most in the magazine publishing space.

Other highlights for Jordan this year include the retirement of Mike Marchesano, former CEO of VNU Business Media (now Nielsen Business Media), which helped bulk up JEGI's already-solid middle market transaction team. Jordan is also proud of the launch, wih Outsell, of the "A View of the Future for CEOs and MDs" event, which is, according to Jordan, "the first truly cross-media event... B2B, B2C, STM, marketing services, PE, etc." The event was held for the first time in Kiawah on November 11. (Disclaimer: This is not an actual day in Jordan's planner; rather, it's an aggregation of recent events.)

  • 6:00 AM: Wake up. Check e-mail for anything that needs immediate attention. Get ready for breakfast.
"I'm probably going to have anywhere from 50-100 e-mails from the crew here."
  • 8:15: Breakfast with Nina Link at Michaels.
"If I don't have breakfast, I'm at work by 7:45"
  • 8:45: Get into the office and check The WSJ, Washington Post Online, paidContent, and the Daily Deal.
  • 10:00: Conference call with Richard Mead to discuss counter-offer on behalf of seller on a deal.
  • 12:30: Lunch with Don Doerfler, CFO of The Hearst Corporation, at The Four Seasons.
"We do that 2-3 times a year to catch up"
  • 2:00: Work with Tollman Jeffs to work on new business pitch for a deal.
  • 3:00: Make management presentation to buyout group from a company for a deal.
"We're selling a very exciting company that's in the marketing services sector. And we got 24 bids in on that company. Of those, the sellers have agreed to invite 14 of those companies to go through management presentation."
  • 6:30: Dinner with kids.
"I like to try and have dinner with my children every night."
  • 7:30: Back to work. More e-mail.
  • 9:00: Reading time.
  • 10:00: Sleep.
