Simple Math: A Small, But Important Sample?

Monday, December 20, 2010 This is a short post without conclusions, I’ll let you draw your own.

I commute by train every day from the suburbs to NYC. Twelve  to 18 months ago, a regular perusal of my fellow travelers would have revealed, I’d guess, 10-15% of them consuming media (i.e.– reading or watching video) on electronics. For the purposes of this post, I’ll consider that distinct from plugging away at email on a handheld or laptop – probably another 15%.

Another 15-20% were inert – sleeping or staring into space. Perhaps 1% would be yammering loudly, inappropriately on their phones. This left 49-64% reading paper (newspapers, magazines, books).

Revisiting this exercise over the past six weeks shows me at least 40-50% now reading on electronics (iPad, Kindle, Nook, phone) and that might be low.

The number of sleepers and zombies hasn’t changed, nor has the number of emailers. Do the math.
