It’s all about balance. Photographer Timothy Hughes’ elegant photo of CUNA CSO Scott Sysol is juxtaposed with a smaller shot of a Philadelphia Phillies mascot to lend an air of light-heartedness to a profile of Sysol.

Yes, the job of CSO is lofty – and the article and Sysol’s full-page shot pay tribute to that – but the writer also wanted to show the human side of the executive by including a sidebar on his life outside of work, and the Muppets-like figure perfectly sets the tone for that aspect of the piece. Not only do readers learn some fun facts about Sysol, they also have more fun reading the article.

What can we say? We want Moore. Although it’s hard to imagine Julianne Moore taking a bad photo, InStyle’s March 2011 issue raised the bar on her portfolio from a design perspective.

Playing off Moore’s celebrated ability to slip seamlessly into character, the InStyle team imagined a cinematic narrative for the photo shoot. Working in rich colors and sensual fabrics and soft lighting, they established a palpable dialog between the clothing Moore wears and the materials of the rooms she inhabits to create an atmosphere of timeliness.

Stylist Alice Gentilucci’s bold makeup palette dovetails perfectly with photographer Michelangelo Di Battista’s angles and lighting to capture the actress’ signature luminescent skin and signature red hair.
