MEDIA BISTRO TOP STORY 1

Mitch Fox, Post-Condé Nast, Is Very Happy "Everywhere."

In the midst of a few weeks this winter, Fox went from Condé Nast group president and all the perks that surrounded a 20-year executive (Details/Vanity Fair publisher, Golf Digest Cos. president, etc.) to building the San Francisco-/New York-based 8020 Publishing, the 19-staff-member company with two bimonthlies--Everywhere (travel) and JPG (photography)--where the Internet is the cause and print is the effect.

"Everywhere and JPG are democracies in action," he says. "We encourage readers to send their favorite photographs to EVERYWHEREMAG.COM and JPGMAG.COM. Our 'membership community' of unique visitors [about 200,000] recommends their favorites, and from there our editors pick 'the best of the best.' Those who are published get $100 and a one-year subscription [$25 value] to Everywhere or JPG."

Fox was a January 7 victim of a CN restructuring (min, January 14, 2008, et seq.), and from there it was a whirlwind. "I got a call from CNET [Networks] founder [1993] Halsey Minor, who was an investor in 8020," he says. "I loved the concept, because I have long been an advocate of integrated marketing and digital complementing print. I came aboard [as president/ceo] and we expanded our San Francisco office with the hire of vp/consumer marketing Laura Simkins [ex-Dwell]. And in New York, I brought in vp/media sales Rob Kligman, who worked with me at Golf Digest. 8020--the 80 reflects the percentage of content generated by our 'membership community' and the 20 reflects the percentage of content we 'curate' from the contributions--is now a full-fledged business operation."

And a very human one. On May 27, which was hot and humid in New York, Fox faced the office crisis of...no air conditioning. "We all kept our 'cool,' and the AC was fixed," he says. "My new career is not where I expected to be five months ago, but I love it." Long-term... Fox envisions 8020 fashion/design, food and automotive Web sites--and magazines, with the same game plan of published contributors getting $100.
