Kitty Morgan Named Sunset Editor-in-Chief

By Steve Cohn

Kitty Morgan, who has been Des Moines- and New York-based in past jobs as Better Homes and Gardens executive editor (food content editorial director) and O at Home editorial director, is coming "home" with her Feb. 15 hire as editor-in-chief of the Menlo Park, Calif.-based Sunset. Per the New York Post (Feb. 15), Morgan succeeds Katie Tamony–who ended a 10-year-stint in Nov. 2011, with former InStyle managing editor Charla Lawhon (2002-2009) serving in the interim.

Morgan is a California native and a graduate of UC/Berkeley. She was Sunset associate travel editor from 1984 to 1988, when the now-1.261 million-circulation monthly was owned by the founding (1898) Lane family. Time Inc. purchased Sunset in the early-1990s, and the magazine is now part of the company’s Lifestyle Division (with Cooking Light, Real Simple, and Southern Living, etc.).

Morgan’s hire by Lifestyle Division group editor (since Sept. 2011) Sid Evans means that she and husband Charles Desmarais no longer have a long-distance marriage. Last August, the former Brooklyn Museum deputy director of art became president of the San Francisco Art Institute.
