Reported in The New York Times yesterday (1/21), following in the footsteps of Rupert Murdoch with The Wall Street Journal, Justin Smith, president of Atlantic Consumer Media, has freed all content on The Atlantic Monthly’s Web site, TheAtlantic.com. Featured content:
- Each full issue of the 10x/year magazine, which sells at the newsstand for $5.95
- Blog postings and Web-only pieces by top level Atlantic correspondents
- The Atlantic archives, which includes work from great American writers like Mark Twain
Though ad sales have been weak online historically, traffic has almost quadrupled in 2007 v. 2006, and Atlantic Media is hiring more online ad sales execs. Goldman Sachs is sponsoring the first free week.
From The Times:
“Executives hope that a rise in traffic brings to The Atlantic…something it hasn’t had in many years: a profit.”
And:
“’The magazine is still in the red, in the $3-to-$5 million range,’ he [Smith] said, but he hopes to be back in the black in five years.”
The Atlantic celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2007. For the full story in The Times, click here (Premium).
