min Exclusive: Emily Listfield Releases Her Waiting To Surface Cover.

As we have reported (May 1, 2006, et seq.), Waiting to Surface is 2000-2006 Fitness editor-in-chief Listfield's fictitious account of the 1999 "vanishing" of husband/sculptor George Dudding, who has never been seen since taking a late-night Atlantic Ocean swim off the Florida coast. Cover (right) has that Beyond the Sea wistfulness, which reflects Listfield telling of her instant life change--and that of daughter Sasha. Maybe a bit of a stretch because Listfield and Dudding had a "trial separation" (nothing in writing) at the time, but a good lead-in for publisher Atria (Simon & Schuster), which will release Waiting to Surface circa October 3, after the summer "beach season," because, Listfield tells min, "this is not a 'chick-lit' book." (It may be a "Hollywood-lit" book as she has received movie feelers.)

Still, there is "curiosity" in the magazine community because Listfield's career at that time quickly went from Self features editor to McCall's executive editor to Fitness, so there is much executive intertwining. "Here, I take more license in using composites for characters, so my colleagues will find it hard to recognize themselves," she says.

Interestingly, Listfield crossed paths with 1995-2001 McCall's editor-in-chief Sally Koslow, whose Little Pink Slips (Putnam) is a fictional tell-all on the 2000-2002 McCall's-to-Rosie escapade (min, April 9, 2007). "In Sally's book, the magazine community is the central character. Here, it plays a secondary role to the newfound relationship between mother and daughter."
