Michael Bloomberg Is 'Disruptive by Design' But New York mayor Michael Bloomberg's tech (Bloomberg L.P.) pedigree made it easy for him to embrace Wired's "Disruptive by Design," and Bloomberg used the magazine's second New York conference on June 14 to announce the start of NYC Media Lab, which will further help "traditional" media acclimate to the digital revolution. NYC Media Lab is a joint venture of New York University's Polytechnic Institute and Columbia University, and it will be housed at NYU-Poly's Brooklyn campus. Initial $250,000 funding is coming from the New York City Economic Development Corp. Also making news at "Disruptive by Design" was Starbucks chairman/president/CEO Howard Schultz, who announced free wi-fi throughout the chain's 6,700 U.S. stores (partner is AT&T). Schultz is photographed (second to left) with MDC Partners CEO Miles Nadal, Revolution chairman/CEO and AOL co-founder Steve Case and Wired editor-in-chief (since June 2001) Chris Anderson. MDC was the conference sponsor.
