It’s just not a Thursday night unless we are partying at the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in Manhattan. And last night we were in fine art form at the Savannah College of Art and Design 2008 SCAD Style Etoile Awards. The attendees were decked out in beautiful designer gear that we didn’t even want to stand next to for fear that we would somehow stain something and spend the rest of our life bartending on the weekends to pay for it. Fashion designers, gallery owners and art lovers mixed and mingled with New York’s elite, many of whom didn’t even have to leave their UES neighborhood to grace the soiree with their collective presence.

SCAD president Paula S. Wallace introduced the night’s honorees: Interior designer Jonathan Adler, legendary avant-garde fashion designer Pierre Cardin and ELLE DÉCOR editor-in-chief Margaret Russell. The 86 year-old Cardin graciously took a cheek-kissing break to tell us that he is “proud to be part of such a beautiful night” and that the event “wasn’t about any particular form of art, it is about honoring talent.” Cardin explained that his greatest joy now is his infamous arts festival held in a tiny village in France called Lacoste, the same village where SCAD has a campus. The next time we swing through the medieval French village of 300 people, we’ll be sure to check it out.

One SCAD alumni-turned-real-life-fashion-designer Jordi Scott explained that the real life experience SCAD provides is the school’s greatest asset. I guess her own boutique in the East Village is proof enough of that. ELLE DÉCOR E-I-C Margaret Russell, who has also been a judge on Bravo’s Top Design, agreed that SCAD represents great design and class; clearly, she was nothing but honored to be honored by the school.

Fashion events in New York are as frequent and frenzied as magazine events, but anytime the two worlds can meld together and the result is a small, cool party it’s truly a work of art.
