Last night (1/23) at the Prince George Ballroom (15 E. 27th St.), American Business Media held its first annual Women in Business-to-Business: Real Stories, Real Successes. Format was a cocktail party followed by a panel discussion led by Erin Moriarty (CBS News Correspondent for 48 Hours). Cocktail party equaled speed networking (“hi, how are ya, let’s get lunch”), and the panel, which was supposed to be about how these women achieved success, equaled much talk about the less fair sex.

“We spend a lot of time thinking about you guys,” Nina DiSesa, Chairman of McCann-Erickson New York and one of the honorees, told the min Team. The feeling is mutual, trust us. (And after all this thinking, our intelligence on the subject is, admittedly, minimal.)

“I could have used another half an hour of this,” said an effusive Gordon Hughes, president and CEO of ABM, post event. So could the rest of the audience, judging by the applause when all was wrapped up. “We’ve already got interest in sponsorship for next year!” (This year, RR Donnelley and COMPUTERWORLD were head fete-ers.)

Some Insights from the Honorees (listed below):

“I was wearing pants on my first day at work [in ad sales], and one of the secretaries told me that I should go home and change right away and that I would never make it in the company in pants. I was upset and called my husband, worried that I was going to get fired from this great opportunity. He calmly told me to meet him at Ann Taylor.” And the rest is history…. – Gloria Scoby, SVP/GP, Crain Communications

“Women’s strong suit is creativity.” – More Scoby

“Some women decided to leave the workforce because it’s so boring.” – Yet more Scoby

“Men are braver than women. But if you pretend to be brave and concentrate on it, then you’ll be brave. That’s what men do.” – DiSesa

“Men love people that remind them of themselves.” – More DiSesa

“We’re not going golfing—we’re not doing anything with the client where I can’t be there. There are other things to do with men.” – Yet more DiSesa
