The New Museum on the Bowery was the perfect venue for Radar’s latest event, which was, we heard somewhere, about honoring “radical talent,” “rule breakers of the year” by giving them a mini-golden urinal. Huh. Back on earth, it was about just what it should have been about: booze (in), music (DJ Shadow is in), beards (back in), and booze (double in).
On the Radar:
- People Moves: PJ Lucus was lured over to the rising mag from Penthouse.
- Integrated Marketing: CK was a big integrated sponsor with product on the tables, posters/billboards in the museum, and a projected ad on a water tower visible from the Svedka lounge on the 7th floor.
- Svedka: The night’s drink sponsor is quickly becoming the dirty downtowner’s vodka of choice.
- Premiers: We're told that this party was the first mag party at the New Museum, and the first party to be thrown after the building's recent full opening to the public.
Off the Radar:
- Gawker: no photog that we could see was there, and the talent drain out of the irreverent media/gossip site was buzz. Later in the evening, Gawker’s Emily and Josh showed up, resulting in items (this one and this one), but their presence was diminished. See what ex-Gawker gawker Alex Balk had to say at Radaronline about the losses.
- Smoking: Even Radar editor Maer Roshan wasn’t exempt from the New Museum’s NO SMOKING ANYWHERE EVEN ON THE BALCONY policy. (“Then what the fuck is the balcony for?!” said one disgruntled party-goer.)
- Mixers: The two bars ran out with about an hour of partying to go. When asked to drink their vodka straight, Radar staffers, hipsters, sponsors, and +1s didn’t have to be asked twice. |

The elusive Emily and Josh from Gawker (Josh's face is obscured by what the photog called in the file name the "ugly hat"). The bearded man in the middle is Radar's Neel Shah, previously of Gawker...perhaps doing a little recruiting? |
