Deep down, we always knew that magazine cocktail parties were a contact sport. But until last Thursday, we didn’t realize that it was a spectator-worthy one. The party, which was the second Atlantic 150th anniversary party we’ve attended over the past year, was held at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts—on stage...in front of an audience. Some of the guests were not unused to this position, including Mayor Bloomberg, (a gimpy) Robert De Niro, and Moby.
After about an hour of drinking and mingling (for some, it was with Arianna Huffington, the Mayor, and some of Atlantic’s finest political commentators—for us, it was mostly with Murray Hill and Angie Pontani, a transvestite comedian and burlesque performer, respectively), Huffington, Moby, and others took the stage to hold forth on “the American idea.” Discussion was moderated by Atlantic contributing editor, PJ O’Rourke.
Some highlights:
“Us having a party while you watch down there is…stupid.”
– O’Rourke, addressing the audience.
“There is no ‘American idea,’ but if there is one, it’s ‘get me out of this awful country and give me a house in the suburbs and decent golf handicap.’ People come here to escape ideas.”
– O’Rourke
“Founding father George
Famously could not tell lies.
George Bush, not so much.”
– A haiku by the usually long-winded Huffington, who was asked to just prepare a haiku, and instead prepared four.
“Since the Republicans swept in [in 1994], things have been more poisonous, and the people’s will is getting done slower.”
– William Weld, former Republican governor of Massachusetts. |
