Food & Wine Launches 10 New Chefs into the Clouds

“I’ve done this about 50 times today. It can’t be good for your health,” said Food & Wine associate publisher Christina Grdovic of the super-fast elevator up to 7 WTC's 52nd floor where F&W celebrated its top chefs of 2007 on 4/4. The min team could barely hear her over the sound of our ears popping, but the second we got off the elevator/high-speed thrill-ride, hearing didn’t matter so much, as we could smell the food, prepared specially by last year’s winners.

7 WTC offer 360 degree views of the city. Unfortunately, the clouds descended that night and food VIPs, including Masaharu Morimoto, of Iron Chef fame, could only stare at their own reflections as they happily chomped on pork buns from MamaFuko and marinated calamari from the Gramercy Tavern.

A drumline/marching band, complete with 10-year-old drum major, escorted the latest “best new chefs” onto the stage where publisher JP Kyrillos and editor Dana Cowin congratulated the newly branded fooderati. And, after the speech, to the delight of all—especially the young drum major—two massive coolers full of Haagen Dazs ice cream were opened, pints and bars shared with everyone who wasn’t already full.
