Michelle Obama Sets a Vogue First Lady 'First' Michelle Obama's March 2009 Vogue cover sets a precedent because of its appearance in this all-important month. Hillary Clinton's December 1998 cover occurred nearly six years into Bill Clinton's presidency, and that month is far less strategic than March, when spring
fashions are displayed. So Vogue editor-in-chief (since June 1988) Anna Wintour, who chose both, has more riding on Annie Leibovitz's portrait of Michelle.Wintour featured Barbara Bush/Laura Bush on Vogue's inside pages, and predecessors Diana Vreeland/Grace Mirabella did likewise with Jacqueline Kennedy/Lady Bird Johnson/Pat Nixon/Betty Ford and Nancy Reagan.
