I Love New York!
Debra Birnbaum
Editor-in-Chief, TV Guide
“I look forward to New York every week because it’s always a surprise. They’re experts at taking a topic I thought I knew thoroughly, and presenting and exploring it in a new and revealing way. Even in a media-saturated city like New York, the magazine always manages to carve out a new perspective on even the most overanalyzed of stories. It starts with the covers, which grab your attention immediately. They’re provocative without being sensational—it’s truly a perfect marriage between design and editorial. And after you’ve soaked up all the investigative features, the culture pages, the reviews, you find the gem that is the ‘Approval Matrix’—that with just a few well-chosen words, brilliantly sums up the week in pop culture.”
Great Reads and Comic Belief
Tom Woerner, Publisher, Brandweek
“The quality of the writing in The New Yorker is excellent, diverse and consistently relevant throughout. The issue that is in my briefcase now is a prime example. There is a Seymour M. Hersh investigative piece in it on U.S. covert operations in Iran, a short satire from David Owen on modern commercial airline travel and a David Denby review of Hancock and T ell No One, and that is only about 15 percent of the total editorial content! The magazine provides me with well-constructed doses of politics, science, social trends, art critique and fiction all under one cover. But what keeps me coming back is the humor. The regular work of David Owen and Ian Frazier is always strong; add to that an appearance by Steve Martin, Woody Allen or David Sedaris. Of course, my absolute favorite part of the magazine is the cartoons! My favorite being an executive on the phone in his office with a caption that says, ‘No, Thursday’s out. How about never—is never good for you?"

“Rolling Stone has the best political opinion and analysis around. It offers a great balance of brief updates, in-depth stories and reviews. The coverage on the Democratic campaign was imp ressive. The level of insight into the personality and legislative history of the two candidates was superior. They were able to present the symbolic nature of the race, as well as the historical moment that it represented, without overdramatizing. Rolling Stone’s music recommendations almost always go straight from the page to my iPod. Their concert reviews are insightful and serve as a guide for me, while their film and DVD reviews are better than most film sections in papers and magazines dedicated to the category.”

“I find Entertainment Weekly’s movie and TV coverage the most entertaining part of the book, but I also think their pop culture content is engaging. Their recent ‘Best of the last 25 years’ issue is one that I have saved and started checking off the few movies I have not seen on the list. I find the ‘Best Picks’ to be right on the money. I have downloaded or watched more than a few of these picks. The articles are also either short or broken up with fun and engaging side stories in a way that works for my short attention span. While I like all the writing, I find the Stephen King column to be particularly interesting and enjoyable. He has a great mix of being expert inside the industry but also writes everything from a fan perspective, which makes it very unique to read. It’s a great package all around.”
