min Magazine 2008 Playground: Neal Vitale CEO,1105 Media Growing up in Reading, Mass., Neal Vitale was a fan of the Boston Red Sox. “I’ll never forget the ‘Impossible Dream’ season of 1967,” he says. “I’ve always viewed the Yankees as arrogant, so the countercultural feel of the Red Sox was attractive.” Vitale started collecting Red Sox memorabilia in the ’80s when he was at Cahners (now Reed Business Information). Friends and colleagues began giving him Sox-y stuff—specifically, signed Ted Williams’ gear. A signed photo of the Hall of Famer in his minor league Minneapolis Millers’ uni is a fave. “I also enjoy a print of Carl Yastrzemski hitting a homer at Fenway in 1967. It reminds me of a wonderful time in my life,” he says. Twenty-five years later, Neal works in L.A., where he lives with his family. But it feels like Beantown in his office. His Williams collection is a constant reminder of his roots. “It’s my identity here,” he says. COMMENTS
