One would expect that the EIC of Food & Wine would be focused on food, but Dana Cowin, 48, has turned her passion into a blessing for less fortunate folks. She is a member of the board of directors for City Harvest, a New York City hunger-relief organization that uses its fleet of 16 trucks and numerous foot volunteers to deliver donations to more than 600 community food programs throughout the five boroughs. Cowin organized the annual Skip Lunch, Fight Hunger campaign, which gets New York-based companies to motivate employees to donate the equivalent of what they would pay for one day’s lunch to pay for the meals of hungry kids.

The effort has raised $500,000 and fed more than 30,000 people this summer alone.  “The week that I got my job at Food & Wine, I attended a fundraiser for City Harvest. I’ve been on board ever since. These meals are not just for the indigent and homeless but also for the working poor, people who have to choose between paying rent and eating dinner.”
