Top 5 Best Obama & McCain Covers
Friday, October 31, 2008

With the election right around the corner, we at min got to thinking about the magazine covers that have inspired us throughout both Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain's campaigns. We looked back six months at both weekly and monthly covers that featured either candidate (and in some instances, both candidates). With over 75 covers to choose from, it was hard to pick just five, but below are our favorites.

1. Ebony

The August 2008, issue featured "Black Cool", the 25 "coolest brothers of all time", with a shot of Obama stepping out of a car, a la a Tarantino film. The image showed the senator in a different light, unique to the way he is typically portrayed in mainstream media (human, family man, leader, revolutionary), though the concept of Obama as "cool" is really nothing new.

2. Newsweek

Newsweek's February 11, 2008, issue explored the history of McCain, showing a side of the Republican candidate that was relatively unfamilar to Americans at the time. The feature looked at his military career, which includes a 5-year-long detention as prisoner of war in Vietnam, as well as his family background and early struggles with his campaign.

3. New York

The summer issue's light-hearted portrayal of the candidates packed a more powerful punch than was (probably) intended. While the media does its best to polarize the candidates, NY asked readers to imagine the concept of McCain and Obama hanging out and relaxing together. While many a magazine did political spoof covers, NY evokes the notion of peace between the parties.

4. Rolling Stone

The March 20, 2008, issue was monumental in the passion with which the magazine endorsed the candidate. Always politically outspoken, RS seemed to have found a renewed sense of political faith in Obama by deeming the senator "A New Hope" and by featuring him on the cover twice, including their most recent issue.

5. Time

The Oct. 27, 2008, cover asks "Does Temperament Matter?" calling out the character differences between not only McCain and Obama, but also between other famous presidential personalities such as Nixon, Johnson, Bush and Lincoln.

Thanks for omitting the TIME cover showing the halo over Obama's head. It is so far from the truth, and in view of what this country is in for if he wins, it would be more than I could handle.

Temperament cover may sum it up the best. McCain just was not very impressive during the debates or on the stump making his case.

You missed the Nov 1 cover of The Economist showing a striding Obama. He speaks well with lots of style, but has nothing solid to show for his political career - a "pig in a poke" if ever there was one. Buyer beware!
