Hearst and Lifetime co-sponsored an event addressing the importance of women voting and running for political office at Hearst Towers this week. Every Woman Counts aims to empower women by encouraging them to involve themselves in politics and vote.

Redbook publisher Mary Morgan stated that, “We felt the need to sponsor this event because it is something that is very important to our readers. It pertains to all women across generations, whether it is teenagers reading Cosmogirl or our own 10 million readers in the 25-49 year demographic.”

Stacy Morrison, EIC of Redbook, added, “It is very important that women are politically involved because often, women get turned off to contentious bipolar politics. We hope to spread the message to women that being political can just mean being who you are.”

The participants in the discussion, including ABC News Correspondent Lynn Sherr, Congresswoman Kay Granger, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, and Dr. Martha Burk, voiced the need for change. As Dr. Martha Burk , “As of now, it will take 300 years for women to reach parity with men in the US Congress.”

Some of the necessary changes voiced by the panelists included gender quotas and tax-deductible daycare, the latter receiving cheers from the largely female audience.

“Sociologists say that there needs to be at least a 30% female presence for there to be real change. Right now we’re not even at 20% in Congress or on corporate boards and for the past 20 years we continually have been making $0.77 to the male dollar,” said Congresswoman Maloney. “This needs to end."
