The web finally took a lunch break today for min's Best of the Web awards Luncheon held at the Grand Hyatt in New York. The luncheon honored
standouts in the online world, including Meredith's Better Homes & Gardens for online team of the year and InStyle.com for best mobile application. Other awards went to the best new site The DailyGreen.com (Hearst Digital Media) and Newsweek.com's "Voices of the Fallen" for best integration with print. Carl Sullivan, the news editor for Newsweek.com accepted the award, "We couldn't have asked for a more compelling subject for this project." In a special issue on the war in Iraq, Newsweek turned the editorial voice over to 100 U.S. troops who had died in the war, printing emails, journal entries and letters they had sent home.
Accepting the award for best online editor in the Top Digital People category for his work with TheStreet.com, David Morrow joked that, 'it just wouldn't be right to not thank (TheStreet's founder) Jim Cramer. I love that bald-headed, needy little man!" Other top digital people winners included Cynthia Wisehart for online editor at Penton Media, Christine deMaio at CondeNet for sales producer and Scher Foord at People.com for web designer.
2008 Digital Hall of Fame Inductees
The annual Hall of Fame inductees this year included: Fran Hauser, People Group Digital, Jason Kint, CBSSports.com, Caroline Little, Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive, Stephen Saunders, TechWeb and Jamie Pallot, CondéNet. Each inductee was introduced with a video, Pallot's being extremely poignant as he spoke through his virtual avatar. "I think the worst publishing advice I ever recieved was allowing myself to be made into an avatar for this video." All eyes were on the Hall of Fame videos, which were the highlight of the ceremony.
Anyone in digital media understands the challenges of working in an ever-changing medium. min's Best of the Web awards represent the increased significance in and celebration of recognition by others who are fighting the same online battles.
