Esquire.com - On the Road With the Birthers
In a chilling two-part series, John Richardson goes much deeper than the usual snickering account of fringe politics in depicting a “birther” movement that seems willing to believe just about anything pernicious and conspiratorial about the American president. He spent time with the founders of the movement in the Southeast to discover their cultural underpinnings and sense of dislocation in American politics. In weekly dispatches from the field he chronicled the actual activities, thoughts and larger social implications of a movement that was about to embody a broader range, enveloping the body politic.
This was insightful reporting that no one else was touching, and it put Esquire.com readers ahead of the curve of a political firestorm.
