EDITORIAL AWARDS

2009 Editorial & Design Awards: Single Magazine Issue

Winner: Travel + Leisure, Special Hotels Issue

For its 12th annual Hotels Issue, Travel + Leisure mixed things up a bit by blowing the doors off the classic hotel guide and capturing the romance and tantalizing drama of the experience. Editor-at-large Peter Lindberg (“If These Walls Could Talk”) walks us through the history of hotel misbehaviors, from Howard Hughes’ legendary extended visit to the Beverly Hills Hotel in 1942 and John and Yoko’s bed-in for peace (1969) to Eliot Spitzer’s 2008 hooker hijinks at the Washington D.C. Renaissance Mayflower. And what is the line between those hotel freebies and guests simply lifting whatever isn’t nailed down in a hotel room?
Amid the fun, Travel + Leisure also provides well-designed service elements in the issue, featuring three stellar villa experiences, a Hotel Handbook of tips and a portfolio of 45 top new hotels. This issue provided both service and social history, a guide and an alluring reminder that hotels are an integral part of travel culture.

Meredith Corp./Midwest Living Magazine: In its May/June 2009 issue, Midwest Living kicked off the summer months by giving travelers great reasons to take their vacations in the nation’s heartland.
