EDITORIAL AWARDS

2009 Editorial & Design Awards: Photo Gallery

Winner: SELF, ‘Brava, Java!’

Almost all of us in the magazine world have learned to love (nay, covet) caffeine as the fuel that helps run an industry and make those monthly and weekly deadlines. In SELF and photographer Jamie Chung’s hands, that love turns to erotic involvement.

For the “Brava, Java!” feature that gives coffee it much deserved defense (there are real health benefits in that cup of joe), the magazine imagery pulls us into Beth James’ editorial. Have we ever really contemplated the loveliness of the single roasted coffee bean as thoroughly as we can when SELF renders it at the size of a child’s head?

The opening splash page traces the life of the bean from vine to grounds beautifully. The curling fingers of cream reaching into that dark sea abyss of a coffee cup is turned into a gorgeous abstract background to the article’s “Buzz-o-meter” chart of the caffeine wallop different drinks can pack. Green tea or even Red Bull? They’re fine for the little late morning pick-me-up. But when the eyes need opening and the next issue is hours away from going to press, make ours java with a jolt.
