EDITORIAL AWARDS

2009 Editorial & Design Awards: Digital Magazine Edition

Winner: Popular Science with Zinio, The Green Home Guide

PopSci engaged in one of the most ambitious uses of the digital magazine format this year with the launch of its Genius Guide series of digital-only books. From the animated cover of its second issue, The Green Home Guide, the readers know they are engaged with something more than repurposed print. The cover literally walks you through a model home. Wonderfully interactive features like the average energy usage state-by-state and embedded video illustrating the waste water in every toilet flush truly blend print design sense with digital richness. The layout, graphics and editorial blocks all demonstrate how readable the digital magazine can be when publishers get beyond repurposing and start rethinking.

Honorable Mentions
Esquire with Zinio – How to Be a Man: The digital edition of Esquire’s “How to Be a Man” issue (with its now-famous flip book cover of celebrity faces) enabled the mixing and matching of Obama, Clooney and Timberlake into 27 combinations at the click of a mouse button.
TechInsights/EE Times with NxtBook – Apollo: The Epic That Launched a Generation of Engineers: Embedded slideshows and video brought the story of the Apollo space program and its great innovators out from print pages and into the minds of readers.
VIVmag with Zinio – The Giving Back Issue: VIV continues to be both a flagship digital magazine for Zinio as well as a lab for fresh ideas about combining magazine design sensibilities with the efficiencies and multimedia range of interactive media.
