EDITORIAL AWARDS

2009 Editorial & Design Awards: Custom Publication Design

Winner: Stars & Stripes, Stripes GAMER

Ten hut! Prepare to play! Play!

Actually, there is nothing standard issue or regular Army about Stars and Stripes’ lovely gift to the troops with its special issue focused on video gaming. Living between extremes of hyper-vigilance and boredom, armed forces stationed abroad have embraced video gaming as a hobby and diversion. This audience is hungry for solid game play, a link back to their lives at home.

This special issue gave men and women in the field a real gaming magazine of their own. The look and feel of the book departed radically from the usual Stars & Stripes brand as another way to signal to readers that diversion and leisure are as important to their readiness as daily training. The editorial involved the audience by discussing their favorites and going behind the scenes at the making of the titles they played. Games and gear were offered as contest prizes for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

More than an ephemeral nod to their audience’s sideline interests, the GAMER issue took itself and its audience’s passion for video gaming seriously. The issue was promoted on the armed forces TV networks and supported by the games industry itself. As a result, the series has attracted 300,000 readers. At ease, soldier. Play when ready.
