Cliff Ransom Promoted to Popular Science Editor-in-Chief

By Steve Cohn

On December 10, Bonnier Men’s Group editorial director (and Field & Stream/Outdoor Life editor-in-chief) Anthony Licata announced the promotion of Popular Science executive editor (since Feb. 2011) Cliff Ransom to editor-in-chief. He fills the one-month vacancy created by predecessor (since May 2012) Jake Ward becoming Al Jazeera/America science and technology correspondent.

The transition should not be difficult for Ransom, what with Licata saying that "Cliff is already the driving force behind many of Pop Sci‘s most innovative and successful stories and editorial programs." Included is the monthly’s February 2014 redesign that will be unveiled after New Year’s Day.

Ransom’s science background makes him "endemic" for the job as he has a B.A. in molecular biology from New York University.  Endemic on the business side is his working on an M.B.A. from NYU with specializations in media and entertainment, finance and marketing.

His magazine career includes The Sciences and Discover as well as non-science-journalism stints as National Geographic Adventure features editor and Budget Travel deputy editor.

Unlike Ward, who worked primarily out of San Francisco, Ransom is based in New York.
