 (1) “Cosmopolitan’s” Fun, Fearless... Are Equally Female And Male.
Fun, Fearless Female has been Cosmo’s tag line since February 1997, when Brooke Shields was the first designee by outgoing editor-in-chief Helen Gurley Brown (now Cosmo International
editor-in-chief after her historic 1965-1997 reign) and successor Bonnie Fuller (now HollywoodLife.com editor-in-chief). But current e-i-c (since August 2008) Kate White perceptively made the transfer to guys in 2003 (Jon Bon Jovi being the first Fun Fearless Male), and the events have always been fun with such FFM designees as Forest Whitaker and Tony Romo thanking White and senior vp/publishing director (since August 1995) Donna Lagani for leading a magazine “that taught me everything.”
Lagani tells min that Fun Fearless’ 15th anniversary (February 2012) is being celebrated with women and men. Female of the
Year Dakota Fanning was a mere three years old in 1997 and Male of the Year counterpart Sam Worthington was a high-schooler in his native Australia. Others selected include actresses Zoë Saldana/Rose Byrne/Freida Pinto, actors Paul Rudd/Jonah Hill/Liam Hemsworth (he and Byrne are also Aussies), and singers Hillary Scott/Blake Shelton, with Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson being the NFL selection. His “Super Bowl,” and that of the other honorees, will be at Cosmo’s March 5 dinner at New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center.
(2) Lucky To Launch A Service Spinoff In September.
VP/publisher (since September 2011) Marcy Bloom says that the yet-to-be-titled magazine will be a “go-to manual from the editors.” It could be that Lucky editor-in-chief (since September 2010) Brandon Holley got the idea from Esquire counterpart (since June 1997) David Granger. Since 2006, Esquire’s twice-yearly Big Black Book has taught guys the grooming and dress-for-success essentials. Very obvious, but very popular.
(3) “Marie Claire’s” At Work To Go Quarterly In May.
This, too, is dress-for-success, with MC vp/publisher (since December 2009) Nancy Cardone telling us that the positive feedback to November 2011’s inaugural Marie Claire at Work supplement led to the regular frequency. “ At Work is a natural for us,” she says. “More women are working, and most MC readers are professionals with high incomes. At Work will be accompanied by digital and event strategies.”
Cardone says that At Work is working right now, with White House Black Market--a designer/retailer that caters to executive women--running a custom creative in the March issue. Editor-in-chief (since April 2006) Joanna Coles and the staff “put ‘at work’ content in the main magazine regularly, so we didn’t have to wait until May for the Black Market campaign to break.”
(4) Fitness And More Have 2012 TV Specials
Both are syndicated half-hour programs from the Meredith magazines. Fitness publisher (since July 2011) Eric Schwarzkopf says that the show will be seen on many ABC-TV affiliates in May to coincide with the title’s 20th anniversary. The content will naturally be on fitness, and it may also highlight the Fitness / More women’s half-marathon in New York’s Central Park on April 15 that already is near the 10,000 maximum number of entrants. “We could easily reach 18,000 if city regulations allowed us to,” says Schwarzkopf. Meanwhile, More’s Reinventing Yourself special will return for a third time in November. Read more.
