Bonnier’s News+ for Tablets to Filter ‘Din of the Web’

Extending its design work on tablet-ized magazine brands earlier this year to the newspaper world, Swedish publisher Bonnier introduced its News+ concept last week, which rethinks the newspaper model for iPad.

Asking the design question, "What if the newspaper had only been invented in the age of tablets?," the new engine delivers a visually impactful package of news to the tablet each morning. Aspiring to create an experience that is both different from print and the Web, the News+ product emphasizes editors’ choices and triaging information more effectively than the persistent and cluttered feeds of the Internet. Promising to filter out “the din of the Web,” the tablet newspaper offers a large collection of screen-filling images and more reflective pieces that are still as timely as the morning’s paper. The app also enables interactions between readers and editors.

“Readers on the Web want a quieter, less hectic news experience with a clear beginning and end and a vetted choice of news,” says Bonnier R&D executive Pontus Schultz. In addition to the more reflective pieces, the News+ model includes a section of updates on the most important and developing news of the day. The tablet engine will be applied to numerous Bonnier daily titles in the coming days, beginning with Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter. It will also be available for business dailies Industri in Sweden and Barsen in Denmark. Each application will allow for daily subscriptions or one-off issue purchases.

Bonnier’s U.S. unit is Bonnier Corp., and the company’s Popular Science was among the iPad pioneers last spring.
