Chris Lambiase has the distinction of being a member of the “dream team” that launched SmartMoney in 1992. He was advertising director under president/editor-in-chief Steve Swartz, who now is Hearst Corp. chief operating officer. And SM publisher David Carey (2010 min’s Sales Executive Hall of Fame member) is now Hearst Magazine's president.

Pretty awesome role models, but Lambiase has done just fine, thank you. The former Wall Street Journal advertising manager continued the momentum at SM as president/CEO during the late-1990s and early-2000s, with ad pages peaking at nearly 1,300 in 2000.

That was work, but “play” for Chris Lambiase has always been bicycling. He has been a competitive cyclist since high school (his wife Jennifer is one, too), so since becoming Bicycling publisher in 2004, Lambiase has been able to combine the two.

With excellent results. Lambiase and his staff marketed Bicycling as “the new golf” in reaching an upscale readership, and the result was growth in such categories as financial and automotive that were previously unheard of. Recognition included four times on the Adweek “Hot List.”

And for Lambiase, recognition from Bicycling parent Rodale came in May 2008 with his adding Runner’s World and Running Times publisher. (RW made the “Hot List” in 2009.) All resulting last fall in his promotion to senior VP/publishing director of the Rodale Sports and Events Group, with Bicycling and RW the core for Web sites, apps, and event-marketing.

The result is that publishing’s best “easy rider” is also publishing’s best “marathon man."
