Digital Hall of Fame: Dave Morrow, Editor, TheStreet.com

Back to Best of Web Winners page

Only a handful of online editors are synonymous with their publications in the way that Granger is to Esquire or Wintour is to Vogue. Since arriving at TheStreet.com in 2001, David Morrow has been more than editor-in-chief; he has been the engine that drove the brand and the business. Editorially, Morrow has given his writers room to develop enterprise pieces that attract readers, scores of awards and new talent from traditional media brands. He initiated TheStreet.com TV and series of podcasts that have moved a text-driven start-up of the original dot-com era into a multimedia presence online that challenges the leading cable brands. Under his leadership, the audience for TheStreet.com has exploded to nearly 8 million monthly uniques. The site is one of the oldest surviving brands of the ’90s online gold rush, and his persistent churn of new content ideas has kept it fresh and growing even as the audiences for financial news continue to fragment as Web 2.0 evolves. Morrow has been central to the business as a whole as well. By developing an editorial calendar for the site and working closely with the advertising team to develop new initiatives, he has led the brand into profitability. Even in the midst of an economic downturn, the editorial and ad initiatives at the site have kept revenues on a growth path. TheStreet.com survived and thrived into this century because Morrow was at the helm.
