Winner: Scholastic News Online for Countdown to Election 2008
As everyone knows, younger voters mobilized for this presidential election in record numbers. But Scholastic’s creative and important coverage of the race prepared the next generation of voters to take their place in civic life. The team of 80 9-to-14-year-olds in the Scholastic Kids Press Corps gave intelligent voice and perspective to politics both to other kids and to the rest of us as well. Beginning in November 2007, these reporters were on the campaign trail, interviewing candidates, reflecting on major events and even including their families in the reporting. Nearly a dozen kid reporters covered Iowa alone. In classic Scholastic fashion, this content was not just raw reporting—it was the building blocks for a teachable moment. The Web site erected tools for deciphering the election, explained basics like the electoral college and shaped materials that teachers and parents could use to extend the experience into classrooms and homes. This was a major news operation and educational project that only would have been possible with the immediacy and depth the Internet allows, married with the cross-platform reach and educational experience of the publisher.
