BEST OF WEB
Best of the Web: Editorial Excellence – Consumer Back to Best of Web Winners page Winner: Sports Illustrated Group for SI.comFor generations the Sports Illustrated brand has provided an authoritative voice and eye on sport, blending some of the smartest commentary in the field with the most compelling imagery. In 2008, SI.com really upped its game and brought some of the strongest parts of the franchise into new territory. The launch of the audio stream from The Dan Patrick Show let online audiences interact with the program live during the Super Bowl. The opening of the SI Vault earlier this year poured a 55-year history of athletics onto the Web, including half a million photos and 150,000 stories. In fact, The Vault was but a piece of SI.com's larger strategy to bring its game to the user on the Web. Its wildly successful Fantasy Football for Facebook reaches nearly half a million players. At its evolving online community, FanNation.com, SI relaunched For the Record, mash-up of SI columnists and bloggers. In 2008 the SI brand recognized that the future of editorial is its ability to reach everyone everywhere and inspire interactivity. At the core of the strategy remained some of the best sports writing and imagery around: must-reads from Peter King and Jon Heyman, massive Olympics coverage and legendary franchises like the annual swimsuit extravaganza. In 2008, SI also reminded us of the Time Life legacy of showing, not just telling. Its exclusive frame-by-fame gallery of the famous Phelps “Touch” at Beijing, where Michael Phelps beat Serbian swimmer Milorad Cavic by .001 of a second. In its extension of the magazine platform’s core editorial and photographic history, SI.com still leads most contenders by several lengths.Honorable Mentions: Forbes.com for Forbes.com: In a tumultuous and frightening year for the economy, Forbes.com columnists kept their heads and offered detailed analyses, such as the masterly “Rebuilding Global Markets,” which dissected government bailouts worldwide with unrivaled intelligence. Gourmet for gourmet.com: On an Internet boiling over with recipes and all kinds of food-as-entertainment programming, Gourmet.com brings a higher calling to the table. In 2008, critiques of celebrity chef culture, the effect of the economy on diet and the struggle of commodity farmers during harvest season underscored its exceptional perspective on an otherwise overcooked subject. Hearst Digital Media for Esquire.com: Maintaining its stylish print layout online, Esquire more than doubled its audience in 2008 by focusing on short, punchy doses of that classic Esky wit and clever editorial judgment. How can you not click on a story entitled “The Worst Building in the History of Mankind?” New York Media for NYMag.com: NYMag rethinks the weekly magazine by turning blogs into compelling minute-by-minute chronicles of urban experience. “Daily Intell,” “The Cut,” “Grub Street” and “Vulture” embrace the range of the greatest city on Earth and communicate its hum and tempo throughout the day. Rodale Inc. Men’s Health for MensHealth.com: MensHealth.com more than doubled its audience in 2008 by exercising its muscles wisely: more than 50 new editorial projects, portal-based blogs and more original content. Scholastic Inc. for Scholastic.com/Parents: Scholastic content, based on extensive research into attitudes toward child-rearing and parental needs, creates an exceptional range of content that not only informs parenting but reinforces its fun and the value of involvement. Smart + Strong for POZ.com: The destination for the HIV/AIDS community, POZ continues to save lives with timely, accurate information about treatment, but it also improves lives by cultivating a rich environment for people to connect and support. It’s community and content that really matters. U.S. News Media Group: Even as weekly newsmagazines struggle for their identity in the digital age, USNews.com and RandkingsandReviews.com have charted a clear path for this company online. They are building editorial franchises and creating content that answers specific everyday questions, from what are the best and most affordable colleges and hospitals to tips for maintaining retirement assets.
