Best of the Web: Digital Team of the Year - TechWeb for Internet Evolution Development Team Back to Best of Web Winners page In 2008, the Internet Evolution Development team was a strike force within United Business Media with a specific mission: develop a new platform for the publisher to deploy b2b social networking systems across brands and for sponsors. The template had to incorporate blog-style publishing, work at low cost and include best practices the company could use for editorial and monetization. UBM gave ops chief Stephen Saunders and his team total freedom within the organization but also tasked them with funding themselves by selling their product to a customer. The result was the InternetEvolution.com “macrosite,” which serves as the model for the team’s work. Internet Evolution brings social networking into a new realm of user-interactivity and merges classic editorial with user-generated energy. New Web 2.0 features like the nPlayer integrates multimedia playback with a cluster of supporting content, from white papers to podcasts. At every turn, the user is invited to interact and manage the content of the Internet Evolution site, which also pulls together more than 170 leading thinkers on the future of technology into a vibrant blogosphere. This UBM team demonstrated the possibility of generating real technical and editorial innovation at a time when publishers of all kinds are focused on scaling back.
