2011 Best of the Web Awards: Editorial Excellence - Overall

The Atlantic – TheAtlantic.com
Just as The Atlantic brand made its mark in print in recent years with a notable relaunch, the Web site has become one of the great growth stories online. TheAtlantic.com has become a digital think tank. Voices such as Andrew Sullivan, James Fallows, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Megan McArdle and Jeffrey Goldberg don’t just join the 24/7 conversation; often, they start it. Their posts are read widely and well not only by the blogosphere but by the policy-makers worldwide. Editor James Bennet and editorial director Bob Cohn have expanded TheAtlantic.com’s portfolio far beyond politics and cultural affairs. McArdle’s business coverage, Corby Kummer’s food items and Alexis Madrigal’s tech beat have quickly become some of the most articulate content in their categories online, clearly popping above the clutter of a relentless digital machine. And just as surely, The Atlantic is penetrating the walls of policy and power, with 78% of its readership in top management positions and leaders like Hillary Clinton and Larry Summers circulating copies of critical articles through their staffs. With a 277% increase in audience over the past three years (58% in the last year alone), TheAtlantic.com demonstrates the relevance even of the oldest of magazine brands in the newest platforms.
Honorable Mentions
The Slate Group – The Root
Whether it is naming an honor roll of 100 emerging community leaders or drilling deeper than anyone else into stories like black farmers’ settlement with government agencies over past discrimination, Slate’s The Root has become the town square where issues affecting the African-American community are discussed.
Smart & Strong – POZ.com
With its focus on the 1.2 million people living with HIV and AIDS in the U.S. POZ doesn’t just provide news, it saves lives. The site has a mission to give readers actionable information for managing their health, and also (through an exclusive dating service) continuing to live life.
Sports Illustrated – SI.com
SI leads online with its strengths: images and colorful analysis by respected commentators. The lush images and enhanced video content pleases the eye while ace columnists like legendary Peter King and Tom Verducci maintain the other side of the SI legacy – deeper thinking about the world of sport.
Time Inc. – Time.com
Time.com has become a source for exclusive news and political analysis that asserts traditional journalistic style and accountability into an online news stream that too often forgets both attributes. Its Techland, Healthland and Newsfeed product launches this past year have enhanced the site with real-time coverage that is even more a part of the digital conversation 24/7.
WIRED – Wired.com
In a morass of me-too tech news, Wired leads the way with true enterprise journalism. Whether it is a breaking story of U.S. Private Bradley Manning on suspicion of being a Wikileaks source or covering the underreported mass extinction of millions of bats, Wired stayed well ahead of the tech media pack.
