InformationWeek's Analytics Strategy
Creating a seamless link, a virtual hand-off, between print and digital platforms has been a dream of publishing throughout the last decade, but few publishers have devoted the resources and editorial focus it takes to move readers effortlessly across pages and sites. TechWeb’s InformationWeek publication and the InformationWeek Analytics Web site took up the challenge and delivered on the promise of continuous media.
The site hosts in-depth research of 30-40 pages by IT professionals who provide analysis and advice on the technologies that IW readers have to implement every day. This original research then provides the foundation for print cover stories that bring the Web site material to the magazine’s 440,000 subscribers. In one instance an Analytics survey of 500 IT pros showed how slowly the enterprise was moving to end-to-end data encryption. The accompanying IW print story sampled the relevant data from the 38-page report in order to build an argument that companies were leaving themselves at risk unless they acted quickly.
In another feature about cloud computing, IW extracted from an Analytics report on cloud services a buyer’s guide that helped drive readers back into the deeper online research. The program has resulted in a marriage of print and online activity that is now helping IW drive a new research and lead-gen business, with hundreds of leads generated for many sponsors. The integration offers a rethink of the role of the cover story in b2b publishing. Now, that powerful driver of print readers becomes a more valuable element in a cross-platform publishing and advertising program.
