Threat Level
Wired’s ambitious Threat Level demonstrates how far the blog format has come from its roots as a personal diary. This is a full-fledged enterprise journalism that makes news. Focused on online security issues, Threat Level has become one of the leading sources of inside information. Its June 2009 feature interviewed E-Gold founder and convicted money-launderer Douglas Jackson on how he and his company helped authorities expose some of the Internet’s biggest cyber-thieves. Kim Zetter’s reporting has revealed serious problems with electronic voting machines in California that resulted in a state investigation.
One of the problems with a blog-driven news economy is fleeting attention spans. But Threat Level continues to demonstrate that sticking with a story over months and years pays off. In 2009 it followed up on reporting it initiated in 2007 on an FBI and Secret Service investigation of a Citibank ATM machine breach. Sticking with the story, it reported last year on the former Secret Service informant who was behind the violation and exposed the lavish lifestyle his thievery financed.
Whether it is covering the Pirate Bay content piracy trial in Stockholm or the ways in which the FBI uses spyware to aid its own investigations, Threat Level has proven itself to be the authoritative source on all aspects of digital security. It not only raises the standard of the “blog,” it demonstrates how enterprising journalism can flourish on the Web.
