Selling Savvy — The Top Pros of 2011

Hall of Fame Inductees
Hall of Fame Inductees

June marks my 25th anniversary at min, and--with very few exceptions--the publishers that I met when I started in 1986 were white males over the age of 50. “Busy season” was between Labor Day and Thanksgiving when advertising packages for the entire new year were set, and those publishers that met budget were essentially on easy street with three-martini lunches and golf from Christmas through the Fourth of July.

But that was the end of an era. The magazine/newspaper/radio/TV media quadrant was getting new players in ad-supported cable and outdoor, leading to digital today. The rate card went from being sacrosanct to being a barometer used by agencies for discounts, because they had the upper hand. Media is infinite, but advertising is finite, and instead of knowing how business would be over the next year, publishers had to now worry about the next week and month.

It is no wonder that, by 1990, the publisher makeup had drastically changed to younger men and women, including 2011 min Sales Executive Hall of Fame inductees Greg Coleman and Valerie Salembier. Over the next 21 years, Greg and Valerie symbolized the smart and nimble people who met the challenges of technology (Who in 1986 would have envisioned the power of digital?) and an economy that not too long ago sunk nearly to the depths of the Great Depression.

In 2005, Jay Burzon and min established the Sales Executive of the Year awards and the Sales Executive Hall of Fame to recognize the hard work and creativity of a special breed. In these pages you will read how the 2011 winners and finalists succeeded in ways that past generations never envisioned. Theirs is a wonderful story and to all, congratulations.
