We are at the crossroads of an exciting period in media. Thanks to the explosive popularity of such digital/social media platforms as Twitter and Facebook, the industry has never been as richly layered and transparent in its presentation of content. And yet despite the naysayers, many consumers still embrace the tactile medium of print.

In this vein, being multiplatform is no longer an exotic approach for a magazine/media brand to employ when it comes to branding an idea or implementing an advertising initiative; it’s a necessity born of the realities of a 24/7 media age. Yes, this has been a difficult period, but never has the industry seemed more vibrantly alive in its suite of offerings. This is a truism that each of min’s 2009 21 Most Intriguing People in Media and our inaugural Top 21 Social Media Superstars is well aware of. The addition of the latter category to min’s annual “Intriguing” honor roll is an outgrowth of the changes that have overtaken the media landscape. We celebrated all of our Top 21 Intriguing People and Social Media Superstars, profiled here in these pages, at a breakfast awards ceremony held Dec. 9 in Midtown Manhattan, sponsored by Zinio and Handmark. —Iris Dorbian
