| Hall of Fame |
Never in publishing history has content innovation been so critical to the future of magazines. Web sites can proliferate links. Television can spew endless sound bites. But when it comes to generating new ideas, new takes, new voices and initiating new cultural conversations, magazines continued to lead the media world in 2009.
Whether it was Anna Wintour proudly defending the authority and wisdom of her September issue or BusinessWeek exposing the continued chicanery of subprime mortgage bankers, whether it was People en Español’s inspired recasting of classic Hollywood scenes with contemporary celebrities or SELF magazine exposing the dangers of generic drugs, magazines led while the other platforms followed.
In min’s first Editorial & Design Awards we hoped to highlight the inherent strengths of the magazine industry—to think harder and faster about the world around us than everyone else. We were not disappointed—the editorial and design teams honored here were more than up to the task, in a challenged industry during even more challenging times.
This was a year when trade magazines like Stars & Stripes met the pain of war with both honor in its celebration of heroism and diversion in its video gaming series for the troops. It was a year when Martha Stewart gave us something to celebrate on all 60 days of summer and Parents magazine showed us how to raise children who would be ready for a more multicultural world. Harper’s Bazaar dazzled us with covers that seemed to pop from the newsstand and Fortune gave us an hour-by-hour walkthrough of a weekend in September 2008 that changed Wall Street forever.
The winners and honorable mentions in this year’s awards are testaments to the place magazines continue to have in American life and why they remain as popular now as ever. These writers, editors, photographers and designers help set the agenda, establish the style, spark the conversations and get their facts straight.
We congratulate all the winners and finalists, who were selected from a pool of entries by an outside panel of publishing experts as well as by min editors. We also present the 2009 class of inductees into min’s Editorial Hall of Fame, who were honored, along with the Editorial & Design Award winners, at an award breakfast in New York on Nov. 18.
