When the going gets tough, the tough get digital. In a year of unprecedented pressures on the print business, magazine brands refused to stand still. This has been a year when the online side of the business was not just the biggest growth center anymore—it was the only growth center. Whether it was panic, or just the absence of other options, magazine brands have focused more of their energies and investment dollars on their digital properties. But it was more than just “going digital.” In many ways, the last year was spent deepening and renewing connections with audiences.

Our Best of the Web Award winners and honorable mentions reflect extraordinary levels of creativity and innovation online that really hit home and spoke to people. Whether it is Newsweek’s incredibly ambitious 20/10 multimedia review of the decade or Martha Stewart’s remarkable dominance of Twitter, The Atlantic’s ubiquity in political conversations online or People.com’s unexpected breakout success in the pets category, magazine brands made their mark online last year.
We also honor this year’s inductees into min’s Digital Hall of Fame—digital veterans who saw the future before the rest of us, and who are still working to make magazine brands a part of that future.
Just as the Great Recession caused many of us to cocoon a bit more and appreciate those closest to us, it had a similar effect on the smartest media companies. Last year was a time to maintain and deepen connections with the people who should matter most—our readers.
We honored all the winners, honorable mentions and Hall of Famers at a breakfast event at New York's Grand Hyatt on April 28. At the same event, we also celebrated our picks for this year's Most Engaged Media Brands as well as the winners of our first-ever In-Box Awards, recognizing excellence in eletter content and marketing.
